The laser tube is the core component of a CO2 laser engraving or cutting machine. After prolonged use, impurities and dirt can accumulate inside, which may impact performance. Without timely cleaning, this buildup can lead to reduced laser power, degraded beam quality, and even severe damage due to overheating.

I. Problems Caused by a Dirty Laser Tube

Impurities, dust, or microorganisms in the cooling water can adhere to the inner wall of the laser tube, obstructing coolant flow. Over time, this prevents effective heat dissipation and affects the tube’s performance. Pulley Laser has found that some customers who neglect cleaning their laser tubes encounter the following issues:

Reduced Laser Power: Dirt buildup hinders heat dissipation, causing the tube to overheat and power to drop.

Poor Beam Quality: Contaminants on the inner wall can distort the laser beam, reducing engraving or cutting quality.

Tube Damage: Long-term buildup may cause overheating and eventual failure of the laser tube.

In routine customer follow-ups, we’ve discovered that some manufacturers completely overlook laser tube maintenance and fail to check the cooling system, resulting in serious performance degradation or equipment failure.

II. Common Cleaning Mistakes

While regular cleaning is necessary, certain common mistakes during the process can damage the laser tube. Here are some to avoid:

Using Improper Cleaning Agents: Strong acids or alkalis may corrode the glass and reduce the lifespan of the laser tube.

Submerging the Tube: Some users immerse the entire tube in cleaning fluid, which can seriously damage components, especially the electrodes.

Overlong Cleaning Duration: Leaving the cleaning solution inside the tube for more than 30 minutes can corrode the inner walls instead of cleaning them.

Rough Scrubbing: Using abrasive tools or excessive force may scratch or crack the glass surface.

III. When and How Often to Clean the Laser Tube

Extended Usage: If the machine runs for long periods or operates in a dirty environment, a deep clean is recommended every three months.

Symptoms Appear: If you notice a clear drop in laser power or beam distortion, clean the laser tube immediately.

Routine Cooling System Checks: Inspect the water tank, check water level and quality every 2 to 4 weeks. If water is murky or low, clean or replace the laser tube as needed.

In general, a routine clean is recommended once a month, with a thorough clean every six months.

IV. Proper Laser Tube Cleaning Procedure

To clean the laser tube safely and effectively, Pulley Laser recommends the following steps:

Disconnect Power and Water: Before cleaning, turn off the power and disconnect the anode, cathode, water inlet, and outlet connections.

Drain the Water: Empty the coolant from the tube. Seal the laser output port with tape to protect optical components from contamination.

Prepare Cleaning Solution: Mix hydrofluoric acid and water at a 1:1000 ratio, then inject the solution into the tube via the inlet until full.

Let it Sit and Shake Gently: Leave the tube stationary for 30 minutes, then gently shake it and drain the solution.

Thorough Rinse: Rinse the tube thoroughly with clean water to remove any hydrofluoric acid residue.

Dry and Inspect: Use absorbent material to dry the tube, especially around the electrodes and laser output port. Check for any contamination on optical components.

Reinstall: After cleaning, reinstall the laser tube according to the original installation instructions.
